Understanding the Child in Context

Childhood and adolescence can be rich in possibility and layered with complexity. Difficulties may emerge through anxiety, low mood, loss, family change, school pressures, relationships, identity, relocation or difficult experiences. At times, a child or adolescent may become overwhelmed, withdrawn or find it harder to manage everyday life.

At REST Clinic, we begin by understanding the child or adolescent in context: their development, experiences, strengths, relationships, family life, culture, school and wider environment. This understanding informs clear recommendations and therapy shaped around their needs and circumstances.

REST PROVIDES ONLINE THERAPY FOR CHILDREN AGED 5 - 11 AND ADOLESCENTS AGED 12 - 18 ACROSS THE UK AND INTERNATIONALLY

Developmentally Attuned

Assessment and therapy are adapted to each developmental stage, strengths and ways of engaging.

Safe and Confidential

A carefully held therapeutic space with appropriate privacy, clear safeguarding boundaries and respect for the child or adolescent's voice.

Family-Centred

Parents and caregivers are involved in ways appropriate to the young person's age, needs and therapy, recognising their important role in understanding and sustaining change.

Care shaped around the child

Following assessment, our psychologists draw on established, evidence-based therapeutic approaches and adapt the work to the child or adolescent’s age, needs, strengths, and circumstances.

Individual therapy

Developmentally appropriate sessions focused on the concerns, experiences and priorities agreed with the child or adolescent and their family.

Parent and caregiver consultations

Focused work to develop understanding, consider the support surrounding the child and help parents or caregivers respond to their needs.

Collaboration with other professionals

With appropriate consent, we may liaise with schools, GPs or other professionals where this would contribute to more coordinated support. Reports, meetings and professional liaison are discussed and scoped separately.
